What you'll do


The Manager of Canada Communications will be a core member of the Communications Team and will partner with VP, Communications, Public Affairs & Customer Care to execute specific elements of the internal and external corporate communications strategy for Wendy’s Canada, including corporate communications; public relations; executive communications; environment, social and governance (ESG) related communications; public affairs; and issues management. This person will work closely with internal teams, franchisees, agencies, media and other external stakeholders to drive key external and internal communications initiatives. This person will be the primary business partner for the Canadian Leadership Team, responsible for the crafting and execution of internal and external communications and public affairs strategies that supports our brand’s growth strategy across Canada.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Support the International business and serve as the lead communications business partner for the Canadian Team, working with the leadership team to craft and execute internal and external communications strategies.
  • Develop external communications programming and strategies, with a focus on corporate positioning and communications, brand protection and corporate reputation.  Execute this strategy in partnership with the VP, Communications, Public Affairs & Customer Care and key internal and external stakeholders such as the Canadian and International marketing teams and other teams across the System. Respond to Canadian media inquiries and serve as a spokesperson and point of contact with business and mainstream media, including digital/online, bloggers and online influencers, third parties, industry associations, NGOs, PR/public affairs agencies, vendor partners, community and philanthropic partners. This work includes leading and executing communications and project-related presentations to senior executives, cross functional partners, media and other internal and external stakeholders for high-profile meetings, our annual Convention and the Wendy’s internal and external websites and blog.
  • Support the VP, Communications, Public Affairs & Customer Care and collaborate with cross functional teams (e.g. Canadian marketing team, Investor Relations, Legal, CSR) on executing Corporate Social Responsibility/Environment, Social, Governance (ESG) projects and communications that position the company and its leaders favorably with investors, analysts, policy makers, opinion leaders, shareholders, the media and current and prospective employees.
  • Work with the Director, Public Affairs on public affairs support for the business in Canada, including representing the brand with trade associations, government agencies, elected officials and other external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Communications team members to encourage message consistency and enhance department capabilities in the corporate/external communications space.  Reinforce the connection between external, brand and system communications strategies and messages.  Partner with other communications team members on implementing external storytelling to appropriately message, pace and sequence communications related to the business and the Company’s strategy and purpose.

What we expect from you

Education / Experience

  • Bachelors Degree: Business, Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related field.
  • At least 8-10 years of Communications experience, with a mix of corporate/in-house and agency experience preferred.
  • Proven ability to recommend and support external communications strategy.
  • Experience with media is important.  Speed and agility in managing incoming requests as well as proactive approach to generating attention.  Media expertise must include evolving digital and social media platforms.
  • Excellent written and oral communications, and interpersonal, skills. Writing in multiple formats under time-sensitive deadlines required.
  • Prior company/agency experience in a branded company.  Must understand and demonstrate brand sensitivity.
  • Comfortable operating above their level providing guidance to executives on messaging and positioning.
  • Passion for teamwork and development in the communications field.
  • Advanced degree in related field preferred
  • Finance, Investor Relations or ESG strategy and reporting experience preferred. 
  • Experience beyond external communications in other disciplines such as journalism, brand PR, Corporate Social Responsibility, public affairs, internal communications, and/or political campaign communications experience preferred. 
  • Fluency in Canadian French preferred.
